If the room is furnished to achieve a minimalistic effect, a single, large carpet would be a perfect fit. You'll have to make sure that the carpet doesn't get in the way of any doors or any of the furniture pieces, also, be sure to place the carpet in an area, where it would make sense to have a carpet or rug. For instance, a rug in front of the kitchen sink is useless, unless you want to constantly have a soggy mat, on which to step on.
The shape is tied together with the size and, again, you'll have to make sure that the location of the carpet won't interfere with the furniture or the functionality of any appliances, as well as the usage of the room itself. Also, be sure to choose a shape that compliments the surroundings well and doesn't stick out like an orange dot on a black canvas.
Colour & Patterns
This is by far the most difficult decision. If you're trying to tie a room together with its interior, you'll surely know exactly what you want from a carpet in terms of colour or a pattern, though that solid decision can always change, but this will rarely leave you confused about what you want. If you don't know what you're looking for, however, the shear quantity of colours and patterns will surely be overwhelming. Be sure to take your time in deciding on exactly what you want, before you choose to purchase or order your carpet.
